YOU CAN REMOVE LITHUANIA FROM THE SOVIET UNION, BUT IT’S NOT SO EASY TO REMOVE THE SOVIET UNION FROM LITHUANIA!!!

Yesterday’s Seimas resolution (passed by 68 for, 4 against, and 16 abstentions, out of 141) to support the narrow architects interest group pushing to develop a conference center on our holy Shnipishok cemetery, has nothing to do with promoting Lithuanian independence from foreign interference, as it is being labeled by those special interests.

It is 100% about reinforcing the evil Soviet empire’s brutal attempt to dominate Vilna's skyline and crush Vilna’s authentic Jewish heritage by erecting a large, ugly sports complex (now abandoned and defunct for over 20 years) on a quarter of our holy site in central Vilna. The cynical attempt to use the real need to memorialize the important events surrounding Lithuanian independence which transpired there, as an excuse to develop that Soviet eyesore is obvious to everyone, and doesn’t change the fact that it is actually a transparent attempt to replace real indigenous Vilna heritage (Vilna’s ancient Jewish community) with Soviet-inspired values and structures. This attempt, like so many before it, will be unsuccessful, and the holy cemetery will be returned to us for careful restoration, for the beauty and benefit of the people of Vilna.
