Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas

Vilna Mayor Backs Away

Author: JHL

In an interview on October 13th (Hoshana Rabba, and the day the Israeli hostages were released), Vilna's Mayor Valdas Benkunskas acknowledged that regardless of the (fallen) Lithuanian government's summer announcement of plans to develop the Shnipishok cemetery site, it would be difficult to implement due to opposition from the international Jewish community.

This is a very important advance that Lithuanian leadership has finally realized that developing a Jewish holy site stolen by the Soviets is just not acceptable.

Congratulations to the mayor and the city council! I hope we will shortly be able to begin negotiations to return the cemetery for restoration so the estimated 50,000 souls can finally rest in peace.
